Samburu National Park

Samburu National Park is a rugged, semi-arid park in the Northern Province of Kenya. The reserve is located a two and a half hour drive from the Rhino Watch Lodge on mostly well-maintained roads. After passing Mount Kenya and climbing over 2,600 m, the journey takes us down to the Samburu plains where huge blue mountains serve as a backdrop to this game reserve. Despite the aridness, the scenery is breathtaking. The Uaso Nyiro River is the lifeline of this area and is bustling with a huge population of crocodiles.

The presence of the river and its shady trees has resulted in a rich flora and fauna. The game reserve is renowned for its rare species of animals that can be found in this park, like the long-necked gerenuk, Gravy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, and the Beisa oryx. Giraffe, buffalo, waterbuck elephant and zebra trek from the surrounding savannah plains to the water. Samburu is also considered one of the best areas to observe leopard, lion and cheetah. For the birders, around 365 species have been recorded and the river area is particularly rewarding. The park is considered a paradise for bird viewing by ornithologists.

This safari is a perfect addition to your stay at the Rhino Watch Lodge as it offers a completely different experience in comparison to other game reserves due to the difference in landscape and the wildlife it attracts. The park is also less well-known and as a result less crowded than most other Kenyan reserves.

Our game drive to Samburu includes 3 days and two nights in the reserve. We will be staying at the Elephant Bedroom Camp on the banks of the Uaso Nyiro River. Rhino Watch Lodge has been working together with the Elephant Bedroom camp for years. This exclusive tent camp is considered a jewel in Samburu National Park, rightly carrying its name. The park is home to large herds of elephants that come to the river to drink and bathe themselves and snack on the fruits of the doum palms surrounding the camp. Besides elephant, prides of lion, or the solitary leopard amongst other games are regular visitors around the camp providing excellent game viewing from the luxury of your tent and with the spectacular scenic background of rolling hills. Needless to say that rangers are present at all times to provide for the safety of the visitors.
